Sitges is a Catalan coastal town located just a few kilometers south of Barcelona. A popular summer escape for both locals and international visitors, it’s known for its spectacular beaches and coves. Bathed in brilliant Mediterranean light, it is a beloved destination year-round.

But for eleven days each October, the town leaves that light behind and plunges into the darkness of world-class horror cinema.

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival is one of the most iconic genre festivals on the planet, attracting not only thousands of fans but also major figures from the world of film every year.

The Origins of the Festival

The very first Sitges Fantastic Film Festival took place in 1968—an entirely different time in Spain’s history. Still under dictatorship, the country was slowly beginning to open up to new forms of artistic expression from abroad. The local council, which has always been closely linked to the festival, sought to create a cultural event during the off-season and proposed a showcase of short films from Spanish and international film schools.

Over time, the festival gained momentum and grew in popularity. What began as a student showcase evolved into an official selection featuring feature films and short films of all types—always centered on horror and fantasy.

The 1980s proved to be a turning point. Sitges cemented its place as a key destination for film lovers, with world premieres such as David Cronenberg’s “The Fly”—now considered a classic.

Sitges Today

Nearly six decades after its humble beginnings, the festival is more alive than ever.

Today, Sitges screens over 400 films in various venues, from modern locations like the Auditori and the Sala Tramuntana at the Hotel Meliá, to historic cinemas like the Cinema Prado and the Escorxador—a lineup that reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage.

The town swells with fans of horror and fantasy, and each year it welcomes acclaimed filmmakers and actors. Over the years, celebrated names like Quentin Tarantino, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Nolan, and Nicolas Cage have walked the red carpet.

Each edition of the festival hands out prestigious awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress. Among past winners are essential titles like Blue Velvet by David Lynch, Ringu by Hideo Nakata, and Oldboy by Park Chan-wook.

Through honors like the Time Machine Award and the Méliès Awards, Sitges also pays tribute to legends of classic cinema, celebrating their enduring legacy.

More Than Just Films

Beyond its cutting-edge lineup of unreleased films, fans come to Sitges for its many side events that celebrate horror in every form.

There are family-friendly workshops in the Kong Area, book signings, exhibitions, and even a legendary Zombie Walk—a massive undead parade where dozens of volunteers fill the streets of Sitges dressed as reanimated corpses.

Perhaps the most surprising part? Many of these visitors discover the magic and beauty of Sitges through their love of horror films—and leave in awe of this corner of the Catalan coast.

Between screenings, fans explore the town’s landmarks: the Church of Sant Bartomeu, the medieval Can Amel Towers, and the stone alleys of the historic center, which come alive each year to welcome festivalgoers.

A Chilling Festival Beneath a Warm Sun

Although the Sitges Film Festival takes place well into autumn, the weather is often warm enough for a swim in the sea at one of the town’s many beaches or coves.

And then there are the Mediterranean sunsets — a bonus for any visitor. As night falls and the shadows stretch across the coast, horror fans gather once more to celebrate at one of the most important film festivals in the world.
