The World’s Largest Haunted House Is in Ohio — and It Holds a Guinness World Record

Haunted house attractions draw enormous crowds around the world, and nowhere more so than in the United States during October, when Halloween transforms entire communities into celebrations of all things macabre.

It’s worth asking why people love being frightened. What is it about a darkened corridor, a sudden scream, or a lurching figure in the shadows that so many people find irresistible?

Horror has entered a new golden age across film, literature, and video games, becoming one of the dominant genres of popular culture. Stepping into a haunted attraction offers something those other formats cannot — the visceral, full-body experience of being the protagonist. The person who can’t look away. The one who has to keep moving forward.

If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it at the largest haunted house in the world: Factory of Terror, located in the state of Ohio.

A Guinness-Certified Haunted House

The city of Canton, Ohio, sits south of Cleveland in the northern part of the state. For most of the year, it is a quiet, unremarkable place. Then September arrives.

That’s when the city’s most famous attraction opens its doors — a gigantic haunted house that delivers weeks of carefully orchestrated terror in the lead-up to Halloween.

Factory of Terror has been officially recognized as the “world’s largest haunted house” by Guinness World Records on three occasions.

That distinction carries real weight. Haunted attractions are a serious industry in the United States, ranging from modest seasonal pop-ups to sprawling theme parks dedicated entirely to fear. They are a genuine American institution.

And yet no haunted house is larger than Factory of Terror — a fact that is apparent not only in its sheer scale but in the depth and ambition of the experience it offers.

The attraction is filled with distinct rooms and environments, each staging its own grim tableau: violence against the innocent, strange creatures lurking in the dark, horrors that seem to breathe.

Dozens of actors work at Factory of Terror throughout the Halloween season, pushing the experience to a level of intensity that few visitors are fully prepared for.

The building itself is an actual abandoned factory, which lends the entire production an authenticity that purpose-built attractions rarely achieve.

Factory of Terror offers five distinct environments, each with its own atmosphere and cast of terrors — zombies, relentless monsters, and psychopathic killers who can appear from any direction at any moment.

Children are permitted inside, provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult. The shows can be genuinely intense. But the goal, as always, is for everyone to have a great time.

Terror in the Hometown of Marilyn Manson

Canton is, by most measures, a small city in an unremarkable corner of the Midwest. And yet there is something fitting about the fact that the world’s largest haunted house ended up here, in the final years of the 20th century.

At the time, one of Canton’s most famous sons was already at the top of the national charts. Marilyn Manson — the artist who redefined shock metal and industrial rock three decades ago — was born in Canton, though he built his career largely outside Ohio.

The city grew throughout the 20th century on the strength of its factories and industrial output. It was in one of those factories, long since abandoned when production declined, that the founders of Factory of Terror chose to establish their attraction after spending several years operating out of downtown Cleveland.

The new location offered more space and more creative freedom. Over time, their haunted house became a genuinely spectacular and chilling production — state-of-the-art lighting effects, dozens of costumed performers, and an atmosphere of sustained dread that unsettles even the most composed visitors.

Beyond the haunted house itself — which typically runs about 50 minutes — the complex also includes a horror-themed bar serving drinks and food, along with games like bowling and darts.

Halloween is the heart of Factory of Terror’s season, but the attraction has also opened its doors at other times of year, including Christmas, for those who prefer their holiday cheer with a generous measure of fear, a dark intensity comparable to Alien Encounter.
