The Intriguing Inverted Rainbow Waterfall That Defies the Laws of Gravity
June 11, 2025

Can you imagine if it rained upwards? Well, something similar is what happens with the so-called Inverted Waterfall or Rainbow Waterfall in Chile.

Located in a remote area of Chile’s Maule region, this waterfall is a rare natural phenomenon. Unlike typical falls, the powerful cascade is disrupted by strong upward air currents that push the water back toward its source. This creates a dramatic rebound effect that appears to defy gravity, making it seem as though the water is flowing upward from the base.

Just steps from the falls lies a serene natural pool, offering visitors a chance to unwind with an exclusive view of the rebellious waterfall in action. Don’t confuse this site with the famous “underwater waterfall” illusion off the coast of Mauritius.

How to Get to the Rainbow Waterfall in Chile

The waterfall is located near Talca, the capital of the Maule region, and a couple of hours by car from the Pehuenche International Pass, the border crossing between Argentina and Chile. Maule means “rain river,” an accurate name for a region that features dazzling nature where waterfalls and virgin lands prevail.

Nearby, you’ll find the Campanario thermal mud baths, a series of natural pools formed by shallow basins filled with mineral-rich mud and algae. These soothing thermal baths can only be reached by a footpath, making the journey part of the experience.

The area offers a great experience for trekking enthusiasts. If that is your favorite activity, it is advisable to carry out the activity with experts through the different possible routes, since it is a rather complex spot due to the difficulty of the terrain.

The inverted waterfall route and its access road have medium difficulty.

The Possible Disappearance of the Inverted Waterfall

Currently, there are growing concerns about the survival of the inverted waterfall. The tributary feeding the Rainbow Waterfall appears to be drying up, causing the unique phenomenon to cease and raising alarm among nearby communities who see it as the region’s most important natural and tourist attraction.

The Regional Ministerial Secretariat (SEREMI) of the Environment has stated: “This matter is currently being addressed by the agency with oversight authority, the Superintendence of the Environment (SMA). They have already taken the necessary steps and are investigating the cause.”

The General Water Directorate (DGA) is now leading the investigation. Initial findings suggest the phenomenon’s disappearance is linked to regional water scarcity, with human interference reportedly ruled out.
